A hickey is a colloquial term refereeing into a bruise. From a medical viewpoint, when sufficient suction is applied to a particular area of skin, particularly around the neck or the inside of the elbows, the regions of skin that are full of capillaries or small blood vessels, it causes the vessels to rupture, and as a result, blood starts oozing from them in little quantities. The blood fluids become accumulated from the adjacent regions and cause a swelling, or edema, of their epidermis. The fluid doesn’t have a port to dispose of this collection from the entire body, and because of this the skin swells up. Quite frequently, the area of the skin around the bruise looks dark blue or even black if the oozing is intense. This is the way a hickey is made.

The best choice is to find medical aid or go to a physician. However, you could also try a couple of simple, yet powerful, remedies by yourself.

• Rubbing alcohol onto the injured area

Douse the region around the bruised skin with sufficient quantities of rubbing alcohol. If the skin is broken, don’t apply alcohol within the broken area, instead around it to prevent further bruising from occurring or spreading. As soon as you’ve applied alcohol, don’t further agitate the bruised areas by rubbing it even more.

This is the most recommended means of preventing a bruise from happening, but it needs to be performed immediately. Apply plenty of ice on the skin, and allow the region become cold. The concept is to”freeze” up the blood flowing so that it becomes viscous and thick, and can’t flow freely around the bruised area.
